Every slab is a set of decisions made before the truck shows up. Here is exactly how we make them, so you can compare bids on something real.
Two driveways can look identical on the day they are finished and be worth entirely different amounts of money. One is four inches of air-entrained concrete on six inches of compacted granular base with rebar on chairs, joints cut to a quarter of the slab depth within the right window, and a proper cure. The other is three and a half inches of whatever came off the truck, poured onto the clay that was already there, with mesh lying in the dirt and joints cut whenever somebody got around to it. On the day of the pour, both are smooth gray slabs. Four winters later, only one of them still is.
Every meaningful choice in this trade is invisible by the time you see the finished work. That is precisely why the cheap bid is so effective — the savings come out of the parts nobody can inspect. So rather than asking you to trust us, this page lays out what we actually do, in enough detail that you can hold any other bid up against it and ask the same questions.
We dig deeper than the slab thickness, because the base has to go somewhere. Pouring on whatever elevation happens to be there is how you end up with two inches of base under one end and none under the other.
Crushed rock, placed and compacted in lifts, not dumped and raked. The base is what isolates your concrete from clay that swells every spring and shrinks every August.
This is a freeze-thaw climate and there is nothing to discuss. Entrained air gives freezing water somewhere to expand. Without it, surfaces scale off within a handful of winters.
Rebar on chairs, sitting in the middle third of the thickness. Reinforcement lying on the ground under the concrete is decoration — it does nothing structurally.
Adding water on site makes concrete easier to place and weaker forever. We order the right slump and we do not water it down to save the crew twenty minutes.
A quarter of the slab thickness, spaced roughly twenty-four to thirty times the thickness in feet, cut within the right window. Joints do not prevent cracks. They decide where the cracks go.
Troweling before the bleed water has come up and evaporated seals moisture under the surface and is the single most common cause of a slab that flakes apart later. Waiting is the skill.
Eastern Nebraska puts flatwork through well north of a hundred freeze-thaw cycles in a normal year, and the ones that matter most are not the deep January freezes — they are the March days that hit fifty in the afternoon and twenty overnight. Each cycle, water in the surface pores freezes and expands about nine percent. Air-entrained concrete absorbs that. Non-air-entrained concrete loses a little paste every time until the aggregate is exposed and the surface is sandy to the touch. That is what surface scaling is, and it is the most common way concrete dies here.
The metro salts heavily and homeowners salt more. Chloride does not dissolve concrete, but it dramatically increases the number of freeze-thaw cycles a surface experiences and drives water deeper into the slab. On new concrete it is genuinely destructive: the rule we give every customer is no deicer at all through the first winter. Use sand for traction. In later years, keep salt use modest and consider a penetrating siloxane sealer, reapplied every three to five years.
This metro sits on three quite different soils. West and south you get glacial till with real clay content, which swells and shrinks with moisture and will move a slab that is not isolated from it by a proper base. Along the Missouri and out through Council Bluffs it is loess — wind-deposited silt that is very strong dry and can collapse when saturated, which is why drainage matters so much on the bluffs. Out along the Platte through Waterloo and Valley it is sand and gravel, which drains beautifully but migrates if concentrated water runs through it. Same trade, three different ground conditions, and a crew that pours all three the same way is guessing on at least two of them.
Anything structural has to bear below the frost line, which in this area means roughly forty-two inches. Step footings, porch footings, post footings for a deck or a lean-to. This is the corner most often cut on step rebuilds, because the footing is buried and nobody can check it, and it is exactly why so many rebuilt steps in this metro are moving again within five years.
April through November is comfortable. We pour into early December using accelerator, heated water, and insulated blankets, and done properly it produces good concrete. From roughly late December through March, the honest answer for most residential work is that waiting produces a better slab, because the ground has to be thawed to prepare a base properly and fresh concrete cannot be allowed to freeze in its first days. We will tell you that rather than take a winter deposit for a job that should wait.
Six questions, and the answers tell you almost everything. What thickness are you pouring? What reinforcement, and how is it held up off the ground? How deep is the base course and what material? Is the mix air-entrained? How and when are the control joints cut? And what is your contractor registration and your insurance carrier? A crew that pours good concrete answers all six without hesitating, because those are the things they think about.
Because water expands about nine percent when it freezes, and concrete that has absorbed water with nowhere for that expansion to go tears itself apart from the inside. Air entrainment mixes billions of microscopic bubbles into the paste, giving the ice somewhere to expand into. In a climate with a hundred-plus freeze-thaw cycles a year, it is the single most important thing in the mix design. Concrete without it looks identical on day one and starts shedding its surface in a few years.
Yes, and we mean that. Get three, and compare specifications rather than totals — thickness, reinforcement, base depth and material, and whether the mix is air-entrained. Bids that look far apart on price are usually far apart on those four things. If a bid does not state them, ask, and be wary of one that stays vague.
A reasonable deposit at scheduling is normal in this trade — material has to be ordered and dates get held. What is not normal is a large payment demanded up front, a cash-only price, or pressure to pay in full before the work is done. Those are the hallmarks of the spring door-knocker crews, and every year in this metro somebody loses a deposit to one.
We stand behind our workmanship, and we put the terms in writing with the estimate rather than making a verbal claim. What no honest contractor will warrant is that concrete never cracks, because concrete cracks — that is why control joints exist. The meaningful distinction is between cracking at the joints where it was directed, which is the system working, and structural cracking, settlement, or surface failure, which is not.
The finish and joint pattern, yes. The color, not exactly. Cured concrete keeps changing tone for years, so new gray is always lighter next to old gray at first, and it closes up considerably over the first couple of seasons. Anyone who promises an exact color match against aged concrete is telling you what you want to hear. If a true match matters, staining both after the new slab cures is the only reliable way there.
