Springfield keeps a genuine small-town center — a few blocks of older housing around Main Street, some of it dating to the late 1800s — surrounded by acreages and open Sarpy County ground. That combination produces two completely different kinds of concrete work, and we do both.
In town it is conventional: driveway replacement, sidewalk and step repair, patios, garage floors, and stoops on houses that have been standing a long time. Out on the acreages it is a different scale entirely. Long driveways, turnarounds big enough for a truck and trailer, shop and machine shed floors, grain and equipment pads, generator and propane pads, and slabs for outbuildings that will see loads no residential floor is designed for. The estimate conversation out there starts with what is going to sit on it and what is going to drive across it.
The first honest thing to say about acreage driveways is that concrete is not always the right answer for the whole length. Two hundred feet of six-inch reinforced concrete is a serious number, and for a lot of properties the sensible plan is a well-built gravel drive with a concrete apron at the road and a concrete pad at the house and shop, where the turning, parking, and dripping actually happen. We will tell you that even though it is a smaller job for us, because a homeowner who spent thirty thousand dollars on a drive they did not need is not going to call us back.
Where concrete does go in, the loads are the design driver. A residential four-inch slab is rated for cars. A tractor, a loaded grain trailer, a skid steer, or a truck with a gooseneck is a different world, and the answer is six inches, rebar on a grid, a properly compacted granular base, and thickened edges where wheels track off the slab. Edges are where acreage flatwork actually fails — a heavy tire dropping off an unsupported slab edge breaks concrete that would have carried the same load in the middle of the pour all day long.
Drainage is different out here too. There is no storm sewer taking your water away, so it goes where the land takes it, and a slab poured without thinking about that becomes a dam or a channel. On a long drive we look at where it crosses a natural draw, whether a culvert is needed, and how the pad at the shop sheds so you are not parking in ice all winter. That is planning work that happens before we form, and it is most of the difference between a drive that lasts and one that undermines.
Nebraska winters do the rest. Everything we pour is air-entrained, we cut joints on time and to depth, and on big flatwork we lay joints out to keep panels roughly square, because long skinny panels crack across the middle no matter how good the concrete is. Frost depth here is around forty-two inches, so anything structural — step footings, post footings for a lean-to, pier footings for an outbuilding — goes below that line.

Often not. A well-graded and maintained gravel drive handles the straight run inexpensively; concrete earns its cost where vehicles turn, park, and sit — the apron at the road, the pad at the house, and the pad at the shop. A 40-by-60 shop is 2,400 square feet, so plan somewhere in the $22,000 to $38,000 range as a realistic band. Bigger pours get slightly better per-foot pricing because the setup cost spreads further.
Usually, but it needs a look first. A loaded mixer is around 65,000 pounds and it will sink into soft ground, rut a lawn, or crack a lightly built existing drive.
